Hornsdale changing hands in Atmos expansion

Atmos Renewables will take full ownership of the 316 MW Hornsdale Wind Farm in South Australia.

Atmos is acquiring Neoen’s majority stake in a move that it says consolidates its position as a leading operator across Australia’s main energy grids.

It is the first time a single company will own and operate renewable generation assets across every state connected to both the NEM and WEM.

The acquisition is subject to standard conditions precedent, with settlement expected in the second half of 2025.

Atmos previously held minority stakes in all three stages of the Hornsdale project.

Developed and brought online by Neoen between 2017 and 2020, Hornsdale was among the earliest utility-scale wind farms to supply electricity under a long-term Feed-in Tariff to the ACT Government.

“This is a milestone that reflects not just scale, but operational maturity,” said Nigel Baker, Chief Executive Officer, Atmos Renewables.

“Managing more than 1GW of clean energy assets in-house signals that we’re here for the long haul and set up for further growth – with the people, systems and experience to operate responsibly and efficiently at scale.”

Atmos said it will continue all existing community engagement and First Nations programs associated with the Hornsdale project, and reaffirmed support for the Canberra Institute of Technology’s Renewable Energy Centre of Excellence.

The announcement follows the recent commencement of construction at Atmos’s Merredin Battery Energy Storage System [BESS] in Western Australia. Once operational, Merredin BESS will further strengthen Atmos’s capability in firming intermittent renewables in the WEM.

Atmos’s total portfolio now spans more than 1.5 GW of wind, solar and battery assets across 18 projects, with multiple additional gigawatts under development.

The company’s shift toward in-house operations aligns with broader industry trends toward vertically integrated renewable businesses focused on both generation and asset management.
