Rooftops cut diesel use for Kimberley households

More than 780 kilowatts of rooftop solar has been installed across two remote Kimberley communities under Horizon Power’s Kimberley Communities Solar Saver (KCSS) program, with a third site now under construction.

The program has so far delivered over $60,000 in energy bill credits across the communities of Warmun and Bidyadanga, with households receiving average annual savings of $450.

Funded jointly by the WA and Federal Governments, the KCSS program is part of the national Community Solar Banks initiative.

Horizon Power is leading the rollout in partnership with the WA Department of Communities.

In Warmun, the first site to come online, 422 kW of rooftop solar was installed, benefiting all 78 homes in the community.

Since August 2024, residents have received almost $30,000 in credits, shared through Horizon Power’s community energy model.

In Bidyadanga, a further 356.4 kW was installed across 33 buildings, delivering shared solar benefits to 133 households.

The community received its second round of credits in April 2025, totalling approximately $33,000 to date.

The installations are designed to offset reliance on diesel generation, while also delivering household cost-of-living relief.

The shared model means energy bill savings flow to all homes connected to the microgrid, whether or not they host panels.

Work is now underway in Ardyaloon on the Dampier Peninsula, with 21 homes due to receive rooftop solar. Around 85 households are expected to benefit once the site goes live.

The program aims to deploy 300 systems across five remote Kimberley communities, with a combined installed capacity of 2 MW. Horizon Power expects around 430 households to benefit.

The WA and Commonwealth governments committed $19.9 million to the broader Community Solar Banks initiative in November 2023. Horizon Power is the delivery partner for the Kimberley component.
