New hub to accelerate WA’s clean energy innovation

A $4 million technology hub in Perth has opened its doors, aiming to fast-track Western Australia’s transition to a low-carbon economy by advancing local expertise in green technologies.

The Western Australian GreenTech Hub, operated by Curtin University, will serve as a collaborative platform connecting researchers, industry, government, and community groups to co-develop and commercialise decarbonisation solutions.

Funded under the State Government’s $40 million Lower Carbon Grants Program – supported by the Chevron-operated Gorgon Project – the Hub is the only stand-alone facility of its kind in WA. It will host innovation challenges and support early-stage ventures through Curtin’s Accelerate Program.

The first innovation challenge is already underway, targeting advanced energy storage systems. The goal is to reduce fossil fuel dependency and enable scalable, low-emissions power alternatives, especially in remote and off-grid locations.

“Successfully developing advanced energy storage systems could reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and provide alternative power solutions, particularly in remote areas, while also creating a new energy industry,” said Energy and Decarbonisation Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson.

While WA’s renewable generation potential is well known – backed by solar, wind, and critical minerals – the state’s ability to retain value locally remains a challenge. The Hub is designed to support technology localisation and develop pathways from research to deployment.

Science and Innovation Minister Stephen Dawson said, “The GreenTech Hub is set to connect innovative solutions to challenges, linking unique WA contexts with global markets and innovation pathways.”

The four-year funding agreement will support a program of industry-led challenges, with calls for proposals expected to open soon. The Hub also acts as a connector for startups and research teams seeking capital, industry partners, or pilot opportunities.

Engineers and developers interested in participating in the innovation challenges or the Accelerate Program can find more information at the GreenTech Hub website.
