$41 million for NSW fast chargers

The New South Wales Government is funding the rollout of 246 new fast and ultra-fast EV chargers under a $41.2 million scheme to enhance low-emissions transport.

The Minns Government has committed $16.1 million in grant funding to support the initiative, which is backed by private investment from energy and infrastructure firms including BP, Energy Australia, Plus ES, Tesla and the NRMA.

Chargers will be installed across 38 suburbs statewide, from metropolitan hubs like Sydney, Parramatta and Mascot to regional centres including Dubbo, Jindabyne and Mudgee.

Each site will feature high-speed charging technology capable of replenishing batteries from 10 to 80 per cent in just 10 to 15 minutes.

The infrastructure boost is part of NSW’s broader push to meet its legislated Net Zero targets and cut transport-related emissions. All new charging sites will be powered by renewable energy.

Accessibility is also a design priority. The stations will feature pull-through bays for EVs towing caravans, boats and trailers, along with facilities for drivers with a disability.

“Making charging faster and eliminating range anxiety are key to getting more EVs on the road in NSW,” said Minister for Climate Change and Energy Penny Sharpe.

“These charging stations will make it easier to charge EVs away from home, while also helping to reduce climate pollution.”

The announcement marks a new phase in the state’s EV strategy, which aims to reduce cost barriers for households and businesses while supporting long-distance travel and regional connectivity.

The network expansion was welcomed by local representatives.

“We are already seeing the benefits of NSW Government investment here in Heathcote where today I have cut a ribbon to celebrate BP’s newest EV charging station,” Member for Heathcote Maryanne Stuart said this week.

“Making it easier for EV drivers to hit the road quickly.”
