Trina Storage says its new certification could set a higher benchmark for system safety across the industry.
Trina has been issued the IEC 61508 Functional Safety Process Certificate by UL Solutions and recognised by ANAB and the International Accreditation Forum, confirming it met rigorous international standards for managing safety risks throughout the full lifecycle of its systems – from design to decommissioning.
IEC 61508 is the global base standard for functional safety, outlining how electronic systems should be designed and operated to reduce the risk of hazardous failures.
It underpins several other safety standards, including those used in the automotive and industrial sectors. For energy storage, the certification covers areas such as battery management system performance and thermal runaway prevention.
“This certification validates our holistic functional safety management system and reflects Trina Storage’s engineering excellence. We’ll continue advancing safety practices aligned with global leading methodologies and contributing to the development of the industry,” said Dr Sheng Yun, Vice President of Trina Storage’s Product Research Institute.
Sam Wei, Global & Strategic Accounts Director at UL Solutions, said the certification reflects growing pressure on energy storage providers to demonstrate control over complex technical risks.
“The energy storage sector relies on functional safety to maintain safe operating conditions for energy storage, whether through the use of a battery management system, charging station, inverters or other control systems for safe operation. We at UL Solutions are honored Trina Storage turned to us to apply our testing expertise to confirm their mitigation of potential safety risks,” Wei said.
The company points to its vertically integrated approach – spanning R&D, manufacturing and operational management – as key to meeting the standard.
It says the certification helps formalise safety practices already in place and could support wider uptake of similar frameworks across the sector.
